Project Description

Kate Coombs, author of more than 20 books for children (picture books, poetry, middle-grade fiction, and board books), needed a website that could do justice to her wide-ranging catalog while speaking clearly to the real decision-makers: parents, educators, librarians, and booksellers. We created a site that feels playful and true to her work without becoming overly “cutesy” or difficult for adults to navigate, all while providing practical tools for classroom and library use.

The Challenge

Kate’s previous online presence needed a full refresh to organize a large and growing body of work across multiple genres and age ranges. The site had to feel inviting and fun (reflecting the humor, mindfulness, nature, and fairy-tale twists in her books) yet remain professional and easy for busy educators and parents to use. It also needed clear pathways for author visits, tutoring, and classroom resources so teachers and librarians could quickly see the value of bringing her books into schools and libraries.

My Solution

We built a warm, colorful, and highly organized site with strong visual hierarchy, book-cover-forward design, and intuitive navigation by category (Picture Books & Board Books, Poetry & Middle Grade). Every section was designed with the adult decision-maker in mind: clean typography, fast-loading pages, prominent educator resources, and straightforward contact options for visits and speaking. The overall tone stays playful and literary without sacrificing usability or professionalism.

Results

The refreshed site now serves as Kate’s complete professional hub. It beautifully showcases her full catalog, makes educator activities and classroom ideas easy to find and download, and clearly presents options for author visits and reading/writing instruction. The design successfully balances the fun spirit of children’s literature with the practical needs of the adults who choose books for kids.
