While it remains relevant for an author to have a website to act as a hub for their presence and content online, the ways in which authors market their work and connected with their target audience continues to evolve. New technologies not only give authors new tools for promotion, but they also help shape reader expectations.

When I first started doing this work, social media was in its infancy, nobody listened to podcasts, and the idea that you could use your phone to create high-quality promotional videos was laughable. Now, of course, there are tons of tools out there to help you create beautiful promotional materials, and also to connect with folks interested in what you’re doing. Creating community, relationships, and engagement is the most important skill set you either need to have or hire as an author these days.

Meanwhile, consumers are used to having the universe at their disposal for research or distraction via their phones. Staying connected is part of everyone’s day, every day, and attention spans have dwindled.

If you’re an author, or are about to launch a career as one, it’s important to stay on top of trends in book marketing and promotion. Whether you’re doing it yourself, or hiring someone to do it for you, you need to know what’s currently relevant so that you can get the most bang for your time and buck.
Current Trends in Author and Book Promotion

1. Social Media Engagement
  • Short-Form Content (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts): Platforms like TikTok (especially #BookTok) have become powerful tools for book promotion, where authors and readers share book recommendations, reviews, and trailers. Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts are also popular for quick, engaging content.
  • Personal Brand on Social Media: Authors are building personal connections with readers through authentic posts, behind-the-scenes content, and direct interaction. Platforms like Instagram and Twitter (X) can be used to share writing progress, thoughts, and insights into daily life.
2. Author Podcasts and Guest Appearances
  • Hosting Podcasts: Many authors now host their own podcasts, where they discuss writing, storytelling, or interview other authors and industry professionals. This kinds of content creates a deeper connection with their audience.
  • Guest on Other Podcasts: Authors are frequently guests on podcasts related to their genre or writing journey, offering insights or talking about their latest work, which helps tap into new audiences.
3. Collaborations and Cross-Promotion
  • Group Promotions: Authors with similar audiences or genres collaborate for promotions, bundling books for discounts or organizing joint giveaways, often amplifying each other’s reach.
  • Influencer Partnerships: Partnering with influencers, especially book reviewers, bloggers, or BookTubers, can give a significant boost to book visibility. Reviews, features, and unboxing videos are common influencer collaborations.
4. Author Newsletters
  • Building a Mailing List: Email newsletters remain a powerful tool for direct communication with readers. Successful authors often offer free content (e.g., short stories, exclusive chapters) in exchange for signing up.
  • Personalized Content: Newsletters today are more personalized and engaging, with exclusive updates, behind-the-scenes content, and tailored recommendations to build reader loyalty.
5. Virtual Book Tours and Events
  • Online Book Launches and Readings: Since the pandemic, virtual events have gained momentum. Authors host book launches, Q&A sessions, or virtual readings on Zoom, YouTube, or Instagram Live, making them accessible to a global audience.
  • Virtual Conferences and Workshops: Many authors participate in virtual literary festivals or workshops, broadening their reach and connecting with readers or aspiring writers worldwide.
6. Interactive Reader Communities
  • Book Clubs and Reading Challenges: Authors often create or participate in virtual book clubs, where readers engage in discussions about the author’s books. Goodreads groups and Facebook book communities are popular for this.
  • Patreon and Exclusive Communities: Some authors use platforms like Patreon to offer exclusive content (early chapters, behind-the-scenes insights, etc.) for paying subscribers, building a tight-knit community of loyal readers.
7. Video Content and Book Trailers
  • Book Trailers: Creating cinematic book trailers that can be shared across platforms like YouTube, Instagram, or even TikTok can generate excitement around new releases.
  • Vlogs and Writing Journals: Some authors vlog their writing journey or book launch process, which helps create more engagement by giving readers an inside look into the author’s life and work.
8. Crowdfunding and Pre-order Campaigns
  • Kickstarter or Indiegogo for Book Launches: Some authors use crowdfunding platforms to fund the production, marketing, or special editions of their books. This allows them to gauge interest and build a reader base before the official launch.
  • Pre-order Campaigns with Bonuses: Authors offer pre-order bonuses like exclusive content, signed copies, or access to a virtual event as an incentive for early purchases.
9. Serialized Fiction Platforms
  • Publishing on Wattpad, Kindle Vella, or Radish: Authors are embracing serialized fiction, where they release chapters or episodes of their work over time. This creates anticipation and a growing fanbase that eagerly awaits each installment.
  • Monetizing Serialized Content: Authors can earn through subscriptions, tips, or unlockable content on these platforms, expanding their income streams.
10. AI and Data-Driven Marketing
  • Using AI Tools for Content: AI-powered tools can help authors craft more effective book descriptions, optimize ads, or even generate creative ideas for promotion.
  • Data Analytics for Targeting: Platforms like Facebook Ads, Amazon Advertising, and Google Ads offer detailed analytics, helping authors target specific demographics based on reading preferences, behavior, and buying patterns.
11. Niche Marketing and Direct Sales
  • Targeting Specific Genres or Themes: Niche marketing involves promoting books directly to small, targeted audiences passionate about specific genres, sub-genres, or themes (eg: cozy mystery fans, LGBTQ+ readers).
  • Selling Directly to Readers: Some authors use platforms like Gumroad, Shopify, or their own websites to sell directly to readers, bypassing traditional online retailers and maximizing revenue. It’s important to note that while flexible and giving you the opportunity to maximize revenue, managing your own e-commerce can be expensive and time-consuming.

The current trends in author marketing and promotion reflect a shift towards direct engagement with readers, multimedia content, and personalized marketing strategies. Social media platforms, video content, newsletters, and virtual events dominate the landscape, while community-building remains central to creating long-term reader loyalty. Embracing these trends allows authors to reach broader audiences while creating deeper, more authentic connections with their readers.
