I love the work that I do creating websites for authors. I’m an avid reader of fiction and nonfiction alike and have learned so much from the books I’ve enjoyed — I’ve been entertained, expanded, and found solace in difficult times. So helping authors bring their books to life on the web so that they can reach new audiences, share more of their work, and create a space for them to showcase all that they do, feels like I’m doing a small part to bring more great books to more people.
When I first started out many years ago I only created fully custom WordPress-based websites. I designed and built a unique site and WordPress theme for each author I worked with, and it was a relatively time-consuming process. As WordPress itself evolved, and I felt like themes that already existed could be used to create great websites, I started offering “semi-custom” websites built using those themes. These took less time, and therefore I could charge less for them. I still offer both services, and both include my time to strategize with the author about their site to make it work best for them to help them meet their specific goals. You can see a portfolio of this work here: https://www.outboxonline.com/author-websites-book-websites/
I found, however, that there were simple projects I was having to turn away because they weren’t a good fit, and that there is a segment of authors either just starting out, or who don’t need something more customized, or who just don’t have the budget to spend on a customized website. So for much of this year, I developed a new offering of simple author landing pages built in Squarespace so that I wouldn’t have to turn those people away. These are simple landing pages that let you feature your book with blurbs and purchase links, link to your social media profiles, showcase your author headshot and a brief bio, and let people sign up for a marketing mailing list.
There are 8 options to choose from for various genres and purposes, and I’ll be releasing new ones seasonally. The process is simple and quick, and you can learn more about it here: https://www.outboxonline.com/author-landing-page-design/#authorlandingpageprocess
As more of them are built I’ll be adding a portfolio of them, and I can’t wait to see what you do with them!
